Eccles triumphs at MCOBA/Lindy Delapenha Golf Classic
Errol Eccles delivered a masterful performance to claim the overall title at the eighth MCOBA/Lindy Delapenha Golf Classic last Saturday, shooting a top score of 39 points in the Stableford-format tournament at Caymanas Golf Club.
Eccles, who walked away with a luxurious weekend getaway for two at Half Moon Hotel and a Jamaica Standard Products gift basket, admitted he was pleasantly surprised by his victory.
"It was a lovely day. I did better than I've been doing recently. To be out there with so many people for a good cause and then be crowned champion, it's the cherry on top," he said.
A proud member of the 'Weekend Warriors' golf group, Eccles dedicated his win to his fellow players and expressed deep honour in having his name linked to Jamaican sports legend Lindy Delapenha.
"Lindy is arguably one of Jamaica's greatest sportsmen ever, so to win something bearing his name is truly magnificent," he related.
The highly anticipated hole-in-one prize at the 10th hole, a brand-new 2025 Nissan E-Power X-Trail, went unclaimed, though Cedric Blair came closest to securing the grand reward.
As expected, Diane Hudson, the tournament's only female overall champion to date, dominated the ladies' category with 38 points. Maggie Lyn finished as runner-up with 37 points.
Richard Josephs led the Super Senior Men's division with 38 points, followed by Larry Lodenquai in second. Meanwhile, Philip Gooden edged out Damion Anderson (both scoring 37) in a tiebreaker to win the Men & Senior Men's category, with national golfer Oshae Haye with a score of 36 securing third.
Howard McKenzie claimed the Elias Azan Trophy as the top-performing Munro College Old Boy, presented by Yasmine Azan and outgoing champion Dane Marsh.
MCOBA President Victor Tomlinson praised the strong turnout and sponsor support, calling the day "absolutely wonderful".
."The players enjoyed themselves, the event was well-organised, and we're grateful for the continued backing," Tomlinson stated.
Looking ahead, Tomlinson revealed plans to review and expand the tournament's impact.
"Our post-mortem team will explore ways to boost participation, sponsorship, and fundraising to further support Munro College's sports programmes," he stated.
