Kemba takes third in 100m at Challenge meet

KEMBA NELSON who was named as an Alternate Person (AP or reserve) by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to the women's 4x100 metres squad to the Paris Olympic Games last week, finished third in the 100m at a World Continental Challenge meet in Switzerland yesterday.

Nelson, a fifth-place finisher in the 100m final at the National Championships, clocked 11.04 seconds to equal her season's best. The event was won by Majindja Kambundji of Switzerland in a meet record 10.90 ahead of her teammate Salome Kora who clocked a personal best 10.95.

Another Jamaican, Imani Oliver, was third in the women's triple jump with a distance of 13.75m as Sody Sarr of Senegal won with 14.10m.

Femke Bol of the Netherlands was in fantastic form at the meet as she became the second woman to go under 51 seconds in the women's 400m hurdles. She improved on her previous best of 51.45, posting a European record 50.95 seconds for the win. Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain was second in 53.41.

The winning time by Bol was the third fastest in history by a woman with world record holder, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States, with her world record 50.65 and 50.68, having the two fastest times.

Nadine Visser of the Netherlands added her name to the list of contenders in what is expected to be a stellar women's 100m hurdles event at the Olympics. She raced to an impressive 12.36, the joint sixth fastest time this season over the barriers, to win ahead of ahead of Poland's Pia Skrzyszowska (12.37).

Another outstanding performance at the meet came in the men's 100m where South Africa's Benjamin Richardson won the event in a personal best 9.86 seconds, ahead of Ronnie Baker of the United States with 9.95 and Camara Ebrahims of Gambia, 9.98.

NOTE: Athletes who were named as AP reserves by the JAAA will not be allowed inside the Olympic Games Village and are not given travel grants. Eight athletes were named by the JAAA as AP athletes.
