Thompson wins again, Jackson pulls up in 200m
National champion Kishane Thompson turned back African sprint stars Letsile Tebogo of Botswana and South Africa's Akani Simbine to score an impressive win in the 100 metres at the 14th Gyulai Istvan Memorial meet in Hungary yesterday.
The day was, however, marred by what appeared to be an injury to World 200 metres champion Shericka Jackson in the women's 200m. Jackson powered her way to the front ahead of Julien Alfred but then pulled up 20 metres from the finish and walked across the line behind the rest of the runners. The race was won by Alfred in a season's best 22.16 with Great Britain's Daryll Neita second in 22.26 Jamaica's Lanae-Tava Thomas was third in 22.54. Another Jamaican, Natasha Morrison, was fourth in a season's best 22.95.
Thompson was the only Jamaican to pick up a win at the meet. In a dominant display he rushed to another sub-10 seconds clocking, capturing the event in 9.91 seconds. Tebogo was second in a season's best 9.99 while Simbine ended third in 10.01. Jamaica's Rohan Watson and Michael Campbell were fifth and seventh, respectively, in 10.15 and 10.28.
There were second-place finishes for Tia Clayton, long jumper Ackelia Smith, Andrew Hudson and Sean Bailey.
In the women's 100m American Tamari Davis led all the way to win the event in 11.00 seconds, ahead of Clayton (11.06). Competing in her first meet on the European circuit Krystal Sloley took third in 11.15 ahead of Morrison who was fourth in 11.19. Tia's twin sister Tina ended eighth in 11.52.
Smith maintained her good 2024 form in the long jump as the national champion produced a best of 6.83m. Natalia Linares of Colombia won the event with 6.87m.
Hudson clocked 20.37 in the men's 200m behind Olympic champion Andre De Grasse (19.98) of Canada.
Bailey ran a season's best of 44.64 in the men's 400m as he pushed winner Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas all the way to the line. Gardiner clocked 44.50.
The next best performance by a Jamaican at the meet saw Rajindra Campbell placing fifth in the men's shot put with 21.20m. Tajay Gayle ended ninth in the men's long jump with 7.76m.
