KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC - A security guard has been remanded into custody until July 21 after he appeared in the Serious Offences Court on Friday, charged with the murder of a 47-year-old client of the Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union.

Police said Shernard Gloster, was shot and killed on Wednesday during a confrontation with the 60-year-old security guard, Wadie Simon. ,

Simon was charged that on Wednesday, July 9, at Kingstown, with malice aforethought, he caused Gloster's death by an unlawful act.

Simon, who did not have a lawyer, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, for which bail was not open to him at this stage.

Crown Counsel Devon Bute told the court that the investigator, Detective Constable Ria Smart of the Major Crime Unit, had indicated that they would need another month to complete her investigation.

The prosecutor said this would also give Simon time to retain a lawyer.

Chief Magistrate Colin John then asked Simon if he had a lawyer and the accused said that Counsel Grant Connell was representing him.

However, the chief magistrate told the accused that his office had contacted Connell's chamber, which indicated that he had been retained only for Simon's interview with police.

John remanded Simon to prison until July 21 for a status hearing.

On Wednesday, police said in a statement that preliminary investigations revealed that Gloster visited the KCCU office to conduct business and that 'during his visit, an altercation occurred between Gloster and an on-duty security guard, resulting in Gloster being fatally shot."

A medical practitioner pronounced Gloster dead at the scene.

"We are profoundly saddened by the loss of life and extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident," the credit union said in a statement.
