D Blackz punches with Muhammad Ali
UK-based dancehall artiste D Blackz is riding high on the wave of excitement surrounding his latest single, ' Muhammad Ali', a song he said was inspired by his experiences.
"I wanted to create something to inspire others to believe in themselves no matter what," said the deejay, whose given name is Oshane Spaulding.
Backed by a gritty music video filmed off Mannings Hill Road in St Andrew, Muhammad Ali is shaping up to be D Blackz's biggest track to date.
Born in Jamaica and raised on Maxfield Avenue, D Blackz migrated to the UK at age 13, eventually attending Geoffrey Chaucer College in London. His first taste of the spotlight came not with a mic, but with moves -- performing as a street dancer known as Dancer Blackz. After school, he often drew a small crowd of fans who followed him to local dances.
Once he transitioned into music, he rebranded, evolving his nickname into the stage name D Blackz. He began frequenting studios and penning lyrics rooted in personal experience. His first single, My Life, dropped in 2010.
"It was rough growing up in Maxfield, there was always violence and conflict in the area. My upbringing was strict; my mum was young, but always working hard to provide. I always looked up to her--she's a real go-getter," he said.
D Blackz said he is working on an EP to tell more of his story through music.
