Rutherford returns to Amazon Warriors for GSL 2025
PROVIDENCE, Guyana (CMC):
The Guyana Amazon Warriors have secured a major boost ahead of the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) 2025, with explosive all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford rejoining the franchise as a replacement for left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein.
The 26-year-old Guyanese star, fresh off representing the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC), will make his much-anticipated return to the Warriors' line-up as they prepare to host the second edition of the GSL at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, July 10-18.
Hosein, originally part of the Warriors' squad, remains committed to the Texas Super Kings in the ongoing MLC, opening the door for Rutherford's homecoming.
The hard-hitting all-rounder first rose to prominence with the Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League making his T20 debut for the franchise in 2018 and featuring in 27 matches over three seasons.
Since then, Rutherford has become a sought-after name in global T20 leagues, showcasing his power-hitting and handy medium pace in the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, Lanka Premier League, International League T20, and MLC.
Warriors Team Operations Manager Leon Johnson acknowledged the loss of Hosein but expressed excitement over Rutherford's return.
"It's disappointing not to have Akeal with us this season. He was eager to play in the GSL. But we're delighted to welcome Sherfane back. His knowledge of local conditions and his ability to strengthen our middle order will be crucial in our title push."
The Warriors began their campaign last night under the lights of Providence, taking on the defending champions, Rangpur Riders.
