After five years of being head coach of Muschett High School's track and field programme, Garth Smythe has called it quits.

Smythe, in an interview STAR Sports, said, "The cup was full and it was running over.

"It has been mounting and it could have happened last year, and the year before. Almost two years now I was going to leave but I choose to stick around a little," added Smythe, who resigned on Monday.

Smythe started coaching Muschett High in 2020, during Covid-19.

While he did not divulge much detail, Smythe said there were numerous reasons for his departure.

"It's a number of things. The way things are being done, so it just forced me to me leave. I made the decision to just leave. I got a couple medals and national representatives while coaching there," he said.

Smythe is one of the top junior coaches in Jamaica. Last year, Muschett High's track and field team made waves at the annual ISSA GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs). At the time, Shanoya Douglas, Johan-Ramaldo Smythe and Osmond Holt brought home medals for the first time.

Douglas won gold medals in the Class Two 200m and 400m, Smythe's son, Johan-Ramaldo won a gold medal in the 200m for Class Two boys, while Holt pocketed a bronze medal.

Based in western Jamaica, Smythe has been coaching for more than 20 years.

The veteran coach was recognised by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association and World Athletics in November last year. He was given an award as one of the top coaches in the country as well. He is a World Athletics level three coach and a United States Track and Field Association level three sprints and jumps coach.

Asked about his future plans, Smythe said he is looking forward to his next coaching job.

"I plan on going to another high school. For now, I cannot say until it is officially confirmed. I might move back to the senior ranks because I put a few senior athletes up there," said Smythe.

Douglas, the Carifta Games Under-20 champion in the 200 metres and Johan-Ramaldo both graduated from the school this year.

"It was a personal decision. Both of them leaving had nothing to do with why I resigned," said Smythe.
