Elliston has ‘great feeling’ leading Spanish Town Police FC to Tier II title
Spanish Town Police FC's talisman Jordan Elliston, and his team were ecstatic as they continued their meteoric rise in local football.
Elliston, the team's leading goalscorer this season, struck nine minutes after the break and Kristoff Russell added another goal in the 59th minute for a 2-0 win over Treasure Beach FC in the final of the Jamaica Football Championships (Tier II), at Drax Hall Sports Complex on Saturday.
Elliston was happy he could have registered his eighth goal this season, and lead his team to the summit.
"It is always a great feeling to know that I can score goals and contribute to a win. Coming from the bottom of the table and we reach this far is a great feeling," Elliston said.
"Just like Treasure Beach, we are the first team to beat Meadforest as well. We know what we are capable of," he added.
The team's head coach, Andre Glanville, said winning the championship was very important.
"We wanted to win the final and win going into the Premier League with a lot of confidence in the season," Glanville told STAR Sports.
"We are proud that over the years we've been winning. We are elated for the work we have put in and big up to Stanley Gardner for the hard work he has done with the club," he continued.
"Thanks to God for everything we have done throughout the season. The players took instructions according to how we went out every game to reach where we are at the moment," he added.
Going into the game as underdogs, Spanish Town Police FC handed Treasure Beach their first defeat this season.
The St Elizabeth-based club, Treasure Beach, had won nine and drawn seven of their 16 matches, including the two semi-final games, before losing in the final.
Spanish Town had beaten title favourites Falmouth FC to earn their place in the final, on penalties, in the semi-final, after a 1-1 draw on aggregate.
Spanish Town have now won Division Two, Division One Major League and Tier II.
Meanwhile, Kemar Ricketts, head coach of Treasure Beach, said that despite the loss, he is proud of the players.
"All season we've been doing well, so I want to congratulate my players. I think maybe I was stressing on the players to win that all-important two-leg game," Ricketts expressed.
"We played without three of our most lethal players. My two leading goalscorers were out. But congratulations to Spanish Town," added Ricketts, who has his main focus on preparing for the Premier League.
