JCF gives summer safety tips
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is urging parents and children to take simple steps to stay safe during the summer.
In a media release, the JCF encouraged children to always inform their parents, guardians or trusted adults of their whereabouts and who they are with.
"Teach children never to accept rides, gifts, or invitations from strangers," the JCF warned, "[and] ensure children are always in the company of a trusted adult when playing outside, especially near water or open spaces." The police also told parents to never leave their children in vehicles, even for a short time, as cars can heat up quickly and become dangerous. Parents and guardians were also asked to ensure their children know how to dial 119 and other important contact numbers in case of an emergency. Outside the home, the JCF encouraged parents to remind children to use sidewalks, cross at pedestrian crossings, and follow traffic signals when walking or biking.
"Protect wallets, phones, and bags in crowded areas like markets, festivals, or bus parks. Do not walk and use gadgets, especially in crowded areas," the JCF advised.
"Balance indoor entertainment with educational or physical activities. Excessive screen use can lead to isolation or online risks," it added. In that breath, the JCF also told adults to talk to children about online dangers.
"Monitor their devices and discourage contact with unknown individuals," the entity said.
