Cops warned to protect JCF’s image
"One act of misconduct, one viral video of disrespect, or one careless moment of neglect can undo months - if not years - of hard work."
That sobering truth comes from Commissioner of Police Dr Kevin Blake as he tackled the weighty responsibility of upholding the brand of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Blake, writing in the JCF's Force Order, said Brand JCF is is not a marketing slogan but a governance principle rooted in public trust, discipline, and values.
"Brand JCF is real, it is powerful, and it is ours to nurture, protect, and elevate, with great pride."
The commissioner warned that when institutions fail to live by their values, they begin to outsource their legitimacy. The authority they once earned erodes.
"In the digital age, a single error can unravel years of investment," he cautioned.
For him, the concept of branding is not about image management, it is about accountability.
"Every time we step into our uniforms, engage with a citizen, respond to a call, or make a decision - seen or unseen - we are doing more than policing; we are either building or breaking Brand JCF."
The commissioner noted that a brand is much more than a logo, stressing that it goes beyond a uniform, a motto, or even a building.
"It is a reputation, built over time through consistent actions, attitudes, and experiences," he stated.
Blake paints a vivid metaphor, urging officers to view the JCF as a polished vehicle, worthy of care.
"If we view our JCF as a scratched and dented car, then we will never be concerned about an additional scratch... let us not add a scratch or a dent to the shiny new JCF that we now view our organisation as - Brand JCF."
Blake reasoned that officers are not just assigned duties, but they embody expectations. Similarly, he said the uniform invites scrutiny.
"The decisions made in traffic stops, on domestic calls, or at community meetings feed directly into the public imagination of what the force represents," he said.
