A 45-year-old Manchester man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly pulled out a firearm at police during an encounter in Fine Grass District on Saturday, July 5.

Fitzroy Blake, otherwise called 'Rasta', a carpenter from the area, has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and assault at common law, following the incident.

Reports from the Mandeville police indicate that about 3:30 p.m., officers were on patrol when residents alerted them to a man walking with what appeared to be a gun.

On arrival, Blake allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband, prompting officers to open fire. He was shot and injured.

Blake was taken to hospital for treatment and, following a question-and-answer session on Tuesday, he was formally charged.

His court date is being finalised.
