Transport authority cracks down on unlicensed ride-hailing taxi operators
The Transport Authority has intensified its clampdown on illegal operators using ride-hailing apps such as Uber and InDrive, resulting in the seizure of 273 vehicles over the past three months.
Managing Director Ralston Smith said the agency has stepped up enforcement through covert operations and the deployment of special seizure teams. He warned that individuals transporting passengers without a valid road licence could face fines of up to $100,000 or two months.
Smith is urging all operators intending to provide public transportation services for a fee to apply for the required road licence, as operating without one is illegal.
In the meantime, the Authority is advising commuters to only travel in legally operated red-plate vehicles. Passengers are also encouraged to report any white-plate vehicles that arrive in response to ride requests through Uber or InDrive.
Reports can be made via WhatsApp to 876-551-8196 or 876-279-8515.
