MP aspirant promises free cars
An aspiring member of parliament (MP) is promising to use his salary and buy cars for Jamaican youth should he be elected.
Derrick 'Black X' Robinson, known for his persistent advocacy to make Chief Tacky a national hero, said the money he earns for the first two years will be used to buy the cars.
"I will be purchasing the gift of a motor car each month for 24 months, and gift it to a 17-year-old Jamaican student living in Jamaica and attending school," Black X told THE STAR.
The prime minister currently earns $28.5 million annually or $2.3 million per month. An MP gets $14.1 million per year, which works out to $1.1 million per month.
Robinson told THE STAR that he plans to run in Westmoreland Eastern in the upcoming general elections.
Westmoreland Eastern, considered a strong seat for the People's National Party (PNP), fell to the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Daniel Lawrence in the 2020 general election. Lawrence defeated the PNP's Luther Buchanan by 11 votes. Independent candidate Haile MiKa'el received 36 votes.
Dr Dayton Campbell is set to be the PNP candidate in the upcoming elections. The general elections are due by September.
Black X is confident that he will be able to get 10 electors registered to vote in the constituency to sign his nomination papers and believes voters will rally behind his vision.
"Persons are liking the move and will vote for me because I am the change," Robinson said.
Although cancer took away his ability to speak, Black X has promised to raise his voice loudly if elected MP.
"I will speak loudly although I cannot talk. This is my passion, just watch and see, " Black X said, adding that he will be running under a banner called Potcover to Boxcover.
The motto is 'Mek Jamaica One Luv Again' and the campaign slogan is 'Better roads, safer driving for you and everyone of us'.
"I am running in this election on behalf of the Chief Tacky platform to advance the call for Jamaicans living abroad to enjoy this electoral privilege and democratic right that we enjoy at home," he said.
