Woman searches for mentally challenged man’s relatives
Sasha Brown is now on a hunt to locate a relative of Ori Harriot, a mentally challenged man who she has been taking care of for about a year.
Brown, 39, said she met Harriot in an arcade in downtown Kingston where she vends. Having a son who is also mentally challenged, Brown saw it fit to take Harriot under her wing.
But after admitting him to the Bellevue Hospital, she was informed that a blood relative is needed on file. Brown is now on a hunt to locate a family member.
"Me never even a think to find any family because I was planning to take care of him, but because Bellevue is saying a relative is needed in the recovery process, I am reaching out for someone to come forward," she told THE STAR. "Him must have a cousin or somebody out there, some relative who can come forward."
Former schoolmate
In 2015, when Harriot was 16, he was reported missing. Brown said she found this out after posting him on Instagram and a former schoolmate responded. She found out that Harriot attended St George's College and lived on Regent Street in Kingston.
"I went to Regent Street and check in the area but them say his family moved to Two Miles, so now I'm not sure what to do," she said. "Them tell me that he was also a prized possession of his father because him used to take him to school every morning on him bicycle, so I don't know if him just leave him up like that or what really happened."
Marcia Mullings Thompson, CEO at Bellevue Hospital, said for discharge, a relative is needed to sign a form for release.
"We can't send a patient out without a relative because we have to make sure that the person to whom he or she would be released can take full responsibility," Mullings Thompson said. "We don't want these individuals to end up back on the streets again so we have to ensure that a place of abode is sound, especially for the mentally ill, because someone has to be there to ensure he or she takes their medication and follows up at the clinic."
