Teen hustles to help family
After losing his father in March 2019, 17-year-old Jordan Wellington felt he had to financially support his mother.
鈥淚 cut people yard and sell the sweets so I can get some of my school stuff to ease the pressure off my mom,鈥 he told THE STAR. 鈥淏efore my dad passed, I didn鈥檛 really have to do stuff like this because he would provide, because he was a farmer and he used to reap things to sell.鈥
Jordan, from Windward Road, east Kingston, revealed that his mother, a clothes vendor in downtown Kingston, has been having challenges since COVID-19.
鈥淢y mother tries to make us all right, but the struggle is there because she is not really selling anything,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat is even why I try to help out where I can.鈥
His mother, 57-year-old Winsome Pottinger, said it has been challenging for her since the children鈥檚 father died.
鈥淎 just me and the two boys, and things very rough, so is Jordan have to help me,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen Jordan walk and sell chocolate, it help us out because sometimes we don鈥檛 have any foodstuff in the house. Sometimes me go out and come in back with nothing, especially since the COVID.鈥
But the pandemic has even affected Jordan鈥檚 hustle.
鈥淚 usually get yards to trim like three or four times for a month, but since COVID it鈥檚 hard because people don鈥檛 really want anyone at their house,鈥 Jordan said. 鈥淚 go to Liguanea like twice per week, but I鈥檓 not really selling much. Persons will buy from me sometimes.鈥
The Alpha Institute student informed THE STAR that he still manages to balance his studies in landscaping and architecture with his work.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been really hard since COVID because classes are online and I have to share my phone with my little brother,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut I try to do as much with school because it is important.鈥
Pottinger added that Jordan is always focused on school and aims to achieve greatness.
鈥淢e try to let him go school so him can get a good education because him bright and love school, but a just the financial help him want sometimes to go through,鈥 said Pottinger. 鈥淗im tell me say when him leave school and a work, him going to help me and make sure me all right.鈥
The money he made from selling his last five boxes of chocolate was used to buy a tablet, which he will be giving to his 11-year-old brother.
鈥淚 have a phone and he needs it more than I do,鈥 said Jordan, who is focused on purchasing a desktop computer, which he believes could help him to enhance his architectural skills.
鈥淚鈥檓 not sure when I can buy it because things are not easy, so I would love if someone can help,鈥 he said.
