Family confused about woman’s death
Family members of 32-year-old Madonna Clayton are shocked by her sudden death on Wednesday, May 22, two days after she was admitted at the Spanish Town Hospital to get treatment for her mental illness.
"It a kill me so much, me nuh know how to explain. Mi a seh if mi did know it better, me leave her mad because at least she would be alive. It a kill me real bad. Every time mi pass her room or see the baby, it a kill me," said her mother-in-law, Donna Warner. Clayton died leaving two children, including a 10-month-old.
It is not clear how Clayton died, but Warner told The STAR that she was schizophrenic and went to a clinic on Monday, May 20, to get her routine injection.
She said that Clayton refused to take her medication and was transported to the hospital.
"When she reach, the doctors said they were going to admit her. I wasn't sure why, but tru dem a doctor, me seh okay [and] left and came home. My son went there the next morning to give her food, toothpaste, and thing. He went back the other day, and they talked. He brought fruits for her. She asked him to carry some clothes for her because she is coming out, and he left and came for the clothes," she said.
According to Warner, when her son went back to the hospital, he did not see Clayton.
She further said that when he enquired about her whereabouts, he was told that the doctors were attending to her, so he left the clothes for her.
Warner said that that evening, she got a call to come to the hospital. She went, intending to pick up her daughter in-law, but instead heard that she was dead.
"They are saying they don't know what happened, she just started to scream, and by the time the doctors to attend to her, she died. I asked the cause of the death, and they are saying they don't know," she said. "I don't know what to say because he (her son) said that he left her there good. Mi nah look seh she just a go in there and dead for a likkle medical problem. I don't even think my son eat from she pass because him just a picture it fi seh look how him and her di deh a talk good and then that happen. Him nah tek it easy at all. They weren't together long, but they got so close. He has never got so close to anyone; a the closest him get to anyone. That's why he is taking it so hard," she said.
Denisha Clayton, Madonna's sister, insisted that she was healthy.
"She did not have any heart, lung or kidney problem; she was good. I need answers," she said.
CEO for the hospital, Dwayne Francis, said that they were made aware of the incident on Monday, May 27, via social media and made arrangements to speak with the family members. He told THE STAR that an investigation has been launched and they are awaiting the findings.
"We got some of the family members together, and we spoke with them. We have logged their complaints in the client complaint system and launched an investigation, but you know it will take some time because we have to talk with the doctors who saw her on the day and [discuss] what they were treating her for," he said.
Francis said that he is committed to ensuring that there is full transparency regarding what happened and that he is prepared to offer grief counselling to the family for their pain.
