Words cannot explain the pain that Christal Gentles says she is feeling after her three-year-old son Daniel Harley died on Tuesday morning.

Young Daniel was diagnosed with leukaemia in September 2017 after his mother realised that he was sick and not eating. Since his diagnosis, he had been in and out of the hospital, getting therapy and various treatments for his condition.

According to Gentles, there were days when he seemed to be getting better, but this was always short-lived.

"The treatment they were giving him was working for a while. The hospital where we were, used treatment which were new drugs. And even though his body was not used to it, it would only work for a while," she said.

Devastating news

When the family thought they had more time with Daniel, who celebrated his third birthday in January, they were given some devastating news by the doctors. Gentles told THE STAR that after she received the news, she was hoping and praying that her loving son would pull through.

"His body was not working with the treatment any more. They said they did not have anything more to give him. He went to the hospital from last week. His system was shutting down. They did some blood test and realised that the cancer came back, and it was more aggressive. They did tell us that he did not have much time, and his life span was short," she said.

Gentles said that she is trying to cope with the loss of her son, but the pain is unbearable.

"You know that I am going to be by his side always. He was in a medicated coma from Monday because his body could not manage any more. I slept with him on that bed until he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning," she said.

She told THE STAR that it is hard to see Daniel go, but she is comforted by the fact that he is no longer suffering.

Gentles said that even though it is hard to come to terms with the fact that her baby is no longer with here, she cannot forget the persons who have been there for her during a very difficult time.

"I want to say thank you to everyone who helped financially and those who couldn't but offered prayers. I thank you very much. All the well-wishers, I give thanks to you. It was a hard battle, and he fought to the end. I am sure he didn't want to go, but he is no longer in pain. He is in a better place now," she said.
