St Jago’s Class Three boys promise fast times at Champs
At the recent G.C. Foster College Classic, fans were treated to some excellent sprinting from St Jago High's Class Three stars Jevaney Findlay and Rajaun Romelly in the Class Three 200 metres. Both produced personal-best times to win their respective heats.
Findlay electrified the crowd with a spectacular 21.86 seconds, while Romelly stopped the clock at 22.26, setting the stage for a mouth-watering clash at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs) next week. Both sprinters will also compete in the 100m, where Findlay has a personal best of 10.97 and Romelly, 11.23.
Earlier this season their coach, Davaon Spence, declared that his group of Class Three sprinters was the best ever assembled at this level and he expected his boys to dominate all events in the class at Champs.
However, their pride took a hit at the Gibson McCook Relays, where they were beaten in both the 4x100m and 4x200m relays. But at the G.C. Foster Classic, both athletes proved they are in the form of their lives, ready to put on a show in the sprints at Champs.
After his fast time, Findlay admitted he was surprised.
"I was surprised with the fast time here, as I only ran the first 150m hard and just cruised the final 50m," said Findlay, who believes he can go much faster. "I'm looking to run 21.65 in the 200m and also improve in the 100m, with a target of 10.7."
Despite finishing behind his teammate, Romelly is confident he can go even faster in both events.
"I can run much faster than what my teammate did on Saturday in the 200m, and we'll just have to wait and see," said Romelly, when asked if he could beat Findlay.
With their impressive performances at G.C. Foster, the stage is set for a thrilling battle at Champs in both events. Fans can expect fireworks as both sprinters aim to deliver something special and fulfil their coach's early-season prediction.
