KFC braces for ‘big’ rush - Company offering 50th anniversary brawta deal
In Jamaica, few things stir national excitement like a KFC giveaway.
So, when the usually buzzing restaurants across the Corporate Area sat still on Tuesday, just a day before the company's biggest promotion yet, staff and customers were stunned. KFC Jamaica turns 50 this year, having first opened its doors in 1975. To celebrate the milestone, the fast-food giant is offering a free Meal Deal, with every Big Deal purchase. The promotion, dubbed 'Big Deal Brawta,' is only valid for today, June 18.
Over the decades, KFC has grown beyond fast food - it has become Jamaica's favourite. So the sight of relatively empty outlets was very much an anomaly.
"This a di calm before di storm," one team lead at the Cross Roads location in Kingston told THE STAR, glancing around the empty lobby. Another worker added, "All my years a work here mi never yet see this place empty yet." In the promotion, for $1,420, customers will walk away with five pieces of chicken, two servings of fries, and two drinks, essentially two full meals for the price of one. For many Jamaicans, that's not just a deal. It's a moment of cultural celebration and financial relief.
"Mi nah lie dem deal sweet. A regular mi pay thousan add dollar fi di Big Deal alone," said Oshane Douglas, who stopped by the Cross Roads branch to scope things out early.
"Now mi a get dat plus a meal deal worth the same time? Dat a five piece, two fries, two soda... dat a Sunday dinner. Mi just hope when mi reach, dem still have chicken. Cause a regular day yuh affi wait fi spicy or dem run outta breast. Imagine dat pon free day?" He recalled a time when the Big Deal cost less than $1,000.
"Every minute it jump. Mi wish a did the whole week!" he said.
That sentiment was echoed by Tameka James, a working mother and hairdresser from Half-Way Tree, who's already ruled out cooking dinner today.
"Mi babyfather a buy di Big Deal, mi a tek di Meal Deal. We a split it down di line. But mi wah know weh dem a get so much chicken from and how early we affi go before it done? Dem better plan fi dis rush," she said. James joked that even though she is on a diet, the deal was worth the risk.
"Dis bigger than calorie count and is a one-time offer," she said. "Mi know dem open 10, but mi a try reach like after 9 still. Cause mi nah wait inna no long line when sun hot. Better mi reach early and chill till dem open."
Beyond the hype, the deal has stirred deeper feelings. For many, KFC isn't just fast food, it's nostalgia, reward, and routine. From birthday treats to pay-day splurges, the red-and-white box holds emotional weight.
"KFC a di only place mi see Jamaicans cuss and still line up same way," said Devon, another loyal customer. "Mi vex when price raise, but mi still buy it. Dis brawta? Come een like them obeah mi."
He added, "Mi see it as a thank yuh. Mi a reach from morning. Rain, sun, mi inside di line."
And while no one knows whether KFC can truly feed the country in one day, Jamaicans are ready to try.
"Even when time hard, KFC pull we out," said Devon. "A one day a brawta, but trust mi it feel like a slice of happiness."
