Nhance uses music as medicine
Whether he is pouring out heartbreak or channelling joy, Nhance seeks to strike a balance between vulnerability and swagger. Long before he racked up millions of views with his breakout hit, No Love, the deejay was nursing wounds and doubts. His first recorded song, Scamma Shi Love, was born out of heartbreak and boldness -- but it wasn't exactly met with applause.
He recalled sharing the song with a few of his female friends who laughed him to scorn, but even during that moment, he still believed in himself.
"Mi shame like dawg, til me start a pop style and a seh 'A joke mi a mek man, mi just did want unu laugh' but really, mi shame," Nhance said.
That moment of rejection could have silenced him -- but instead, it sparked the transformation from Kenneil to Nhance.
"Somewhere down the line, mi dash weh di whole pride and shy thing and emphasise pon [mi talent] and seet deh it enhance now," said the Tables Turn deejay.
The name Nhance, he said, wasn't chosen at random. It represents a version of himself turned up to the max -- stronger, more focused, more fearless.
Music runs in his blood. As the son of dancehall artiste Gaza Sheba, Nhance grew up immersed in the culture. But rather than ride on anyone's coattails, he hustled to build his own legacy -- starting as a dancer on Dancing Dynamite and even dabbling in track and field.
"Mi always wanted fi do supm in entertainment... mi even did a run just fi create excitement," he laughed.
The fast-rising entertainer, having recently released his debut EP, Monster of My Era, is happy with the growth of his career. He is confident that his style of music and personal connection to fans make his songs a standout in the industry.
"If yuh listen five new artistes right now, you'll notice seh Nhance choice a word different, [mi] song dem have diverse topics and mi a talk fi everybody. Most songs now have in the words 'Chopping, chop di line, guzu etc,' but mi build my songs wid a body of words weh none a dem deh nuh involve inna. Suh mi choice of words are always different and even mi beat dem different - I like juggling," he affirmed.
"My music stand out because mi motivate yuh fi work, not 'chop,' mi motivate yuh fi stay motivated, believe in yuhself and it give yuh a go-getter vibe," Nhance said.
