Sista Sasha singing for the saviour - Hit-making singer trades stage for Christ’s sanctuary
She rose to prominence on the dancehall scene with the global hit 'I'm Still in Love With You', alongside Sean Paul, a track that introduced her as a confident, sultry voice of the early 2000s.
Today, the voice that once energised party crowds is devoted to worship and praise. Sista Sasha, formerly known simply as Sasha, has left behind the glamour of dancehall in pursuit of a higher calling rooted in faith and purpose.
When THE STAR caught up with gospel recording artiste Sista Sasha, given name Karen Christine Chin, she reflected on her spiritual journey and the decision to fully dedicate her life to ministry just over a decade ago.
"The signs of the time have pushed me to make this radical decision," she shared, adding, "The flesh is never satisfied. And, also realising that no amount of money or fame can bring happiness."
That spiritual shift marked a turning point in her life. While others may pursue fame and recognition, Sasha said she found true peace only after stepping away from the spotlight and committing fully to her faith.
Now working under On the Spot Music with road manager Sir Will, and collaborating with Yagga Music--the production company led by fellow gospel artiste Radic, who produced her latest track I'm A-Okay, Sista Sasha is using her platform to inspire others.
"Before, it was about making the money and pleasing the world," she admitted. "Now it's about pleasing God and being an instrument used to bring the message of salvation."
And while the genre has changed, her fiery delivery and vibrant energy remain. Drawing from her experience in secular music, she now channels her signature edge into praise.
"My past has definitely influenced how I deliver the gospel to some degree," she explained. "I give it the same radical vibes my audience is used to."
Naturally, the transition didn't come without scepticism. Sista Sasha shared that she was initially fearful about losing fans or not being embraced by the gospel community. But time and faith quieted her doubts.
"In the beginning, I was a bit worried. But now I know, no matter what you do or say, you can't please mankind."
Despite facing criticism from both sides--secular and spiritual-- she remains grounded.
"Critics will always be there; criticism will never stop from both sides. But, I silence the noise in my mind and stay focused," she said. "God can change anyone. The road is rough, but hold on. Just step out in faith--God is able," she encouraged.
Interestingly, her past in dancehall hasn't created a wall as she still keeps in touch with a few of her colleagues from that chapter of her life and says the respect and love is still there.
Sista Sasha's journey is similar to that of fellow former dancehall star Minister Marion Hall, formerly known as Lady Saw, another influential figure who stepped away from a successful career to dedicate her life to ministry. While fans may be hopeful for a future gospel collaboration between the two, Sista Sasha remains focused on her faith and continues to offer encouragement to those who have followed her journey.
"I love and respect Marion Hall and many others in the gospel fraternity. I don't know what God has in store," she told THE STAR. "I hope all my fans will be inspired and make the change like I did," she added.
