Selfless Rebel - Entertainer rushes to help crash victims
Christina 'Dancing Rebel' Nelson said she is still traumatised by an incident on Sunday, in which she and her team took an injured infant who was involved in a horrific crash to hospital.
"I'm still a bit shaken up as I have really bad anxiety. So I'm still going through a few little flashbacks but that's nothing compared to what the survivors are going through. I haven't been able to get anyone to reach out to me who is a part of the family, so I don't know who survived. But I am hoping for the best even though sadly, the baby died at the hospital," she said.
The incident, which occurred in the Montego Bay area on Sunday, left one person dead and others nursing injuries sustained from the crash. The 29-year-old, who recently celebrated her birthday with a new car, said she and her friends were on their way to an event in Montego Bay when they saw the crash scene.
"We couldn't have passed because persons were deeply in need of help. When my security pulled over, we saw the car flipped with an iron running directly through the car. My security decided to help, along with my friend Gabrielle and the photographer. But while they were trying to pull the car door, they realised it was locked and we needed assistance in doing so. We were all crying for help, but no one was making an attempt to help, everyone was videoing which was just not human-like," she told THE STAR.
She continued, "One of the ladies in the vehicle managed to get out with a baby boy and she was panicking and asking everyone for help. So my friend took the baby and I said 'Come mek wi get the baby to the hospital as soon as possible'," she added.
Nelson recounted arriving at the hospital with the baby still battling for his life, but expressed disappointment with what she considered a relative lack of urgency.
"When we rushed him to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, he was still alive. Upon arrival to the hospital no one became alerted, everyone was just looking ... there were no beds available for the baby, in which I think the Government really needs to look into," she stated. Nelson said that despite not knowing the family, the incident hit her hard.
"After helping the baby, I still had work to do. So I had to brush that all off mentally, emotionally and physically, and I went to perform in Montego Bay. It was an excellent show," she said. Nelson pleaded to all road users to be careful on the roads.
"I'm encouraging all drivers to be safe. It's Christmas, drink responsibly or get a designated driver. I just want you guys to be safe for the Christmas and even after for the new year. So please stop speeding, God bless," she urged.
As of Monday, 396 persons have been killed in fatal crashes since the start of the year. The Road Safety Unit is projecting that 427 persons will die in crashes by year end. A record 488 persons died on the nation's roads last year.
